Introduce a new service called Click, Drop & Go. This is what small businesses need!
Combine the benefits of Royal Mail's Click & Drop service (quick and easy online postage payment and shipping label printing) with those of the Post Office's Drop & Go service (no queuing and proof of postage).
Ecommerce businesses that are too small to qualify for an OBA have simple needs - we want to easily access our order details, pay for and print shipping labels then post our orders, with the reassurance that we can make a claim if it is lost or damaged in the post. This is currently only possible with Click & Drop then a long queue in the Post Office or LDO (between 7 and 9am, 4 days a week in my area!).
Drop & Go allows you to drop off lots of parcels and collect proof of postage later, but it's not easy to pull all the order details in from different marketplaces.
We need a combination of the two - pay and print on C&D then drop off in bulk at the Post Office and collect the proof of postage on the next trip.
Maybe there's little incentive for the Post Office to do this as they make no money for processing C&D items (although it's no worse for them than processing it all for C&D customers who have queued up) but that's up to Royal Mail to negotiate, not us. The disconnect between Royal Mail and the Post Office causes a lot of confusion and extra hassle for your customers. We just need an efficient end-to-end service, we shouldn't even need to know who is providing the component parts of it.
Of course, if you included tracking on all items that were posted (since they now have QR codes) so that items posted in post-boxes were scanned when you received them, we'd already have proof of postage and you wouldn't need to worry about all this. Or just accept the C&D order as proof of postage - if you can see that someone has posted hundreds of orders through C&D and only claimed for one, it's unlikely that they are trying to abuse the system.
Either way, please find a way to offer a more streamlined service to us small businesses…
